The Controversy Over the Safety of Synthetic Hormones
Premarin and Prempro, the top selling synthetic hormone replacement drugs, were inaccurately reported to significantly increase the risk of cancer and heart disease in a 2002 study called the Women’s Health Initiative. This was a faulty conclusion made from poor interpretation of the data, which led to widespread concerns about it’s use among women that would have benefited from treatment. Within a few years, the total sales of Premarin was reduced by 50%. However, the data was reexamined by a large group of various specialists in July of 2012. Having said that, the bioidentical hormone pellets that we use are derived from plant based sources, that do not carry the inherent risks that possibly could be present with synthetic hormones. Furthermore, our delivery method of the hormones via pellet insertion under the skin avoids the liver metabolism that occurs with oral forms. Potential serious adverse effects that could occur would do so only after metabolism by the liver, which our method avoids. Premarin
Premarin (which stands for PREgnant MARe uRINe), is a synthetic hormone produced by chemically altering the equine estrogen hormone extracted from urine of a pregnant horse. This chemical hormone analog, is then put into pill form and given to humans with the intention of replenishing the hormones that have decreased during menopause.
